On Saturday afternoon, NJ/NY Gotham FC were in Washington, D.C., to take on the Washington Spirit. This was a big game for both teams, since the home side wanted to climb up the table from third place to second, and the visitors had an opportunity to move one step closer to the NWSL Shield. But unfortunately, one goal was their undoing. The Bats lost 1-0, putting the NWSL Shield at risk.
It was a scoreless game until Lucia Di Guglielmo scored for the Washington Spirit in the 70th minute. The D.C. team was arguably more of a threat before that goal, and the Bats did not play at their best. Ann-Katrin Berger was a big reason why the match remained scoreless for so long, thanks to her five big saves.
Notably, the fixture was a challenging one, which is not a surprise. Most games against Washington are never easy, and that was seen in the narrow win in the Queens Classic over the summer. Gotham knew that they had to be perfect defensively and score at least one goal to earn all three points. The ladies failed to do either.
Nevertheless, the NJ/NY side remains in first place regardless of the fact that San Diego Wave FC won their game. But what did we learn from Gotham FC’s loss to the Washington Spirit?
A few Gotham FC debuts
During the match, Gotham FC’s newest players made their debut. Leila Ouahabi made her debut, as well as her first start, since signing for the team a few weeks ago. The defender played as the left-back, as Guro Reiten started in the attack since Jaedyn Shaw was not able to start. She had a decent performance, but arguably, Mandy Freeman was the better fullback on the day.
Then, Olivia Wingate made her debut when she came on as a substitute in the 59th minute. The forward was not bad after only playing five minutes with the North Carolina Courage in 2026. She made a few good runs up the right side of the pitch. It is somewhat questionable, though, why Freeman did not stay on longer to allow Midge Purce to stay on the wings. Nevertheless, Wingate showed some potential.
The NWSL Shield is at risk
Gotham really needed to win this game. The team does not want to go on a bad run as the regular season comes to a close. Of course, as seen last year, that means nothing when it comes to the Bats in the postseason. Still, they do not want to go on a winless streak, and they do not want to lose out on the NWSL Shield.
That would be incredibly embarrassing, especially since the NJ/NY side had an eight-point lead at one point. Yes, the Spirit is never an easy team to play, and they deserved this win. But if Gotham does not beat the Orlando Pride next weekend, then the Shield might be out of their hands, especially since San Diego won.
More importantly, if they do lose out on the Shield, then teams will believe they are ripe for the picking when it comes to the postseason. It is vital that this does not happen and that the team remains strong.
Gotham FC cannot go on one of their droughts
It is critical that Gotham does not go on one of their scoring droughts. In other words, the Bats cannot have multiple games where they score one goal or none. There is no guarantee that they can win the Shield by not scoring at least a few goals in their final matches.
Yes, this is only the second game in a row where the team scored zero goals. However, this has been seen before, and Gotham FC does not want to start another drought.
