On a rainy and cloudy Saturday afternoon, NJ/NY Gotham FC played their first NWSL match since the long international break ended.  The team welcomed Bay FC to Sports Illustrated Stadium, who is arguably the strongest the California side has been thus far.  Nevertheless, the Bats wanted to continue their unbeaten streak against the visitors and win the first match since the season opener.

With one of the best attacking performances of the season, especially in the first half, Gotham FC won 3-0 to earn a critical three points.  The goals started thanks to the invisible player, Own Goal, before Rose Lavelle and Esther González found the back of the net.  All of the goals came in the first half, and the second half had the Bats take a step back in their offensive prowl.

Still, the game belonged to the home side.  They dominated possession, maintaining about 59% throughout the game.  The Bats also were remarkably superior in the final third, outshooting the visitors 25 to three.  14 of those shots were on target.  And of course, two players found the back of the net for the Bats, with Bay contributing as well.

The first half was a little stronger compared to the second, but there is no question that the NJ/NY team made it impossible for the California side to get back into the match.  Here are three things that we learned from Gotham FC’s huge home win.

Gotham FC finally won at home

One of the goals for Gotham FC in 2026 was to have a better home record compared to 2025.  Last season, they had a 4-4-5 record, which was not good.  Then, entering Saturday’s game, the Bats were 0-1-2.  They desperately needed the win, especially at home, and thankfully, the squad got the job done.

Again, it was a dominant performance that thankfully led to the goals that Gotham needed to win.  And in complete honesty, the home side easily could have had more goals if not for the fantastic performance from Bay’s goalkeeper, Jordan Silkowitz.  She had 12 saves, so without her, the visitors might have left with a 5-0 or 6-0 defeat.

Ideally, the big win, the end of the four-match winless streak, and the win at home will lead to more for Gotham FC.  Only time will tell whether this acts as a spark for the rest of the year.

Guro Reiten is finally here!

Gotham FC signed Guro Reiten before the transfer window closed, all the way back on March 12.  However, due to visa issues and the long international break, the forward finally made her debut this weekend against Bay FC.  It was a long time coming, and her possible impact on the team was immediately felt.

She only played the first half, and also had to play as a left-back with all of the injuries to the Gotham backline.  But she was still in the attack, forcing the ball into the box.  Her passes were superb as well, providing long balls to her teammates.  The quality of her play was similar to what fans have seen during her time at Chelsea F.C. Women.

It was only one half, but the Bats are super lucky to have Reiten on the team.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes for her to get her first assist and goal.

Gotham FC allowed zero goals despite missing defenders

The Bats were without five defenders against Bay FC: Bruninha, Kayla Duran, Mandy Freeman, Lilly Reale, and Emily Sonnett.  As a result, Reiten and Midge Purce had to step in as the left-back and right-back, respectively.

Therefore, the fact that Gotham did not allow a goal is quite impressive.  It helped that the opposition struggled in the attack, but still, they did well to limit the opportunities.  In addition, the constant attack by the Bats helped keep Bay away from their defensive third.

Now, whether this will be the case against future teams is questionable.  It would be better for Gotham FC to get some of those missing players back.
