What does the future hold for Christian McFarlane with NYCFC?

Throughout 2024, rumors swirled about Christian McFarlane and how the New York City FC player had interest overseas. Specifically, there were rumors that the Pigeons' sister club, Manchester City FC, was set to sign him.

However, the left-back is still with NYCFC, and no concrete offer was reported. McFarlane stayed with the team and finished the season splitting time between the first team and MLS Next Pro side. However, this was his first professional season where he spent the majority of his time with the first team.

For the longest time, former head coach Nick Cushing would not give him a chance. It took an injury to Kevin O'Toole for the defender to play in Major League Soccer, and he did extremely well with his limited opportunities. McFarlane proved he could start in the league, but eventually, O'Toole retook his spot in the Starting XI.

Questions surround Christian McFarlane's role with NYCFC

As mentioned, McFarlane spent most of his time with NYCFC rather than NYCFC II. This led to a decrease in his playing time in 2024, for most games were spent on the bench. Still, he made 19 appearances for the teams, including 13 with the MLS side.

While O'Toole has done well and better than expected at left-back, it was surprising McFarlane did not get more playing time once the starter was back and healthy again. NYCFC could have used him in multiple matches throughout the year. For some reason, Cushing kept him out of the squad or on the bench.

There is no question McFarlane is capable of playing in MLS. He also needs more playing time to continue to develop. O'Toole is the starter, but the younger player could easily pick up some more starts and come off the bench. Will McFarlane get that chance in 2025? Will the new head coach possibly think he is the better player, and start him over O'Toole?

These are all questions that must be answered in the offseason. More importantly, will the defender remain with NYCFC? Or will he move overseas? It would be a shame not to see him shine in MLS before moving to Europe. His story would be similar to Joe Scally, who barely played with the first team and then became a starter in Germany.

Truthfully, it would be smart for McFarlane to remain with NYCFC in 2025 to further his development. If the plan is for him to move to Manchester City, then an initial loan move is highly probable. Therefore, he should stay in MLS for one more year to prove his talent and increase his chances of playing with the first European club he signs for.
