Raul Gustavo's signing was the perfect move for NYCFC after Justin Haak's departure

Justin Haak left NYCFC, leaving the Pigeons without a defensive player. However, Raul Gustavo's signing from the summer looks incredible in the aftermath.

Unquestionably, New York City FC fans would have loved to see at least another year of Justin Haak and Thiago Martins partnering up in the backline. The two worked well together as the main center-back partnership and were arguably the best defenders on the team in 2025. Hence, it was not surprising, with Haak leaving for the LA Galaxy on a free transfer, that Martins was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the Pigeons.

However, Haak's departure has made a certain summer signing look incredible. Brazilian center-back Raul Gustavo joined NYCFC back in August, and he did not get playing time right away. Of course, like any new player, it can take time to adjust to a new environment and team. But by the end of the season, he had solid performances as a center-back, whether in a five-back or four-back system, and even as a left-back.

Therefore, at this time, Gustavo is the clear answer to play as the center-back and partner with Martins. Fans knew they were getting someone who could potentially make a difference within the squad. He also added depth following Birk Risa's departure, and even with Haak's great performances, there were questions about whether he was coming in to partner with Martins.

Gustavo's end-of-the-year play gives confidence in his ability to partner with Martins and hit the ground running in 2026. Having played under Pascal Jansen for a short time with Ferencvárosi Torna Club and now for a few months with NYCFC, he should be comfortable with the head coach's tactics. Additionally, he is familiar with the team already and will not need time to adjust as a new center-back would.

More importantly, there already appears to be chemistry between him and the other players. That always aids in the level of play on the pitch. The defender is also extremely passionate about the club already. He might have only joined over the summer, but his Instagram is already full of NYCFC photos.

Nevertheless, NYCFC still needs to go out and sign another center-back. They need the depth in the backline, and competition for a starting role is vital, even for the usual starters. Gustavo might have had a good start with the Boys in Blue and should be good to go this season. That is not a guarantee, though, which is why another defender should be signed.

Moreover, Strahinja Tanasijević has not always been reliable. Then, Max Murray still might not be ready for MLS, even as a backup center-back.

In the end, NYCFC at least knows they have their two starters at center-back. The partnership between Gustavo and Martins could blossom into something special.
