The USWNT are through to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics after a dominating 4-1 win over Germany in Marseille, France. Sophia Smith scored in her very first Olympic games with a brace, while Mallory Swanson recorded her third goal of the tournament. As for the NJ/NY Gotham FC girls, it was bitter-sweet as fans saw great performances, struggles, and injuries.
How did the Gotham players fair on Sunday?
Ann-Katrin Berger got a second start for Germany with a goal after a solid performance and clean sheet against Australia. The Gotham FC player did not appear comfortable in the net with the pressure from the USWNT players getting to her. Mistakes from her defense also played a factor, allowing four goals for the first time this season. Berger also picked up a minor injury after Swanson’s goal but was able to continue. Despite the loss, Germany is still expected to move on to the next round, if they can handle business with Zambia on Wednesday.
Rose Lavelle was back in the lineup for the USWNT, playing the entire 90 minutes. She was a huge part of the development of the first goal, with a beautiful give-and-go to Trinity Rodman to break through the German defense. Despite a few defensive mistakes, the Gotham FC player continued to keep the midfield in check with her set pieces and passing work.
Lynn Williams started on the bench again, this time coming on late for Smith during the 85th minute. After a fast breakaway, Swanson found Williams 1 v 1 with the defender, knocking it into the back of the net. It was a special moment for the forward, who was only called to the team for the injured Catarina Macario. This was her second goal ever at the Olympics, having recorded one with an assist at the Tokyo Games.
There was a tough scene to watch as Tierna Davidson was forced off the pitch just before the third goal during the 44th minute after picking up an injury. She was struggling to keep up in the backline, having made a mistake that led to Germany’s first goal. The center-back was replaced by Gotham teammate Emily Sonnett, who was able to re-create a strong backline for the United States.
Crystal Dunn was also back in the lineup at left-back. She was quiet most of the match since Smith and Lavelle did most of the work on the left-attacking side of the pitch. Jenna Nighswonger also saw some minutes late, coming on for Rodman during extra time.
The USWNT needs just a draw to secure first place in the group following their stellar win over Germany. They will face off against Australia on Wednesday at 1 PM EST in Marseille, France. Gotham FC players are expected to start.
