Top 5 NYCFC home matches of all time
- NYCFC is currently in the middle of the club's tenth season
- In honor of their stadium approval, here are the top five home matches of all time
2. NYCFC 3-2 New York Red Bulls August 6, 2017: Another derby battle
Going back to the Villa era, NYCFC struggled in the beginning to beat the Red Bulls but were finally getting the hang of it as both teams came into this 2017 match fired up. There was also a crowd of about 33,679 people at Yankee Stadium that occurred on a warm night in the Bronx, as always.
Villa opened the scoring for the game to put NYCFC up early, which did not last as Bradley Wright-Phillips tied things up before halftime. Then, things were not looking too great for the boys in blue as Wright-Phillips scored yet another goal to put them down 2-1.
However, with the crowd on their backs, NYCFC did not quit as Villa scored another goal in the 72nd, then a penalty in the 75th to complete the hat trick and the win over the Red Bulls. This was one of the best come-from-behind wins in their history as it was against their archrivals in front of a huge crowd.
1. NYCFC 2-0 New England Revolution August 28, 2021: Taking on the top team
At this point of the 2021 season, the New England Revolution was too far ahead to try to get the top seed in the East as NYCFC continued to try to lock a decent position for the playoffs. This match was a potential playoff matchup as both teams were among the league’s best. There is a rivalry between the Revolution, especially of their location. Therefore, the fans would love to see them perform well and beat them at all costs.
Castellanos was chasing the Golden Boot as he came into the game in hot form. He was the one who put the team on the board first with a goal in the 32nd minute, which was allowed following VAR review.
NYCFC completely dominated the match at both ends of the field, to the point that they scored another by, who else than Castellanos for the 2-0 win over the Revs. This was a great moment of the NYCFC MLS Cup season as they had just given New England their fourth loss. Also, if they were going to be a potential playoff contender, NYCFC knew how to beat them (and sure enough they did).
