New York City FC’s season has been night and day.  They had a poor start to 2024, but recently they have won seven of their last eight games.  This includes the recent four-game winning streak, where three matches were on the road.  Then, they have lost once in their last ten fixtures.  However, this run has not been easy, for some matches have been ugly.  This includes the recent win over the New England Revolution.

Yet, great teams can win in ugly situations.  The current run makes fans wonder whether this is the NYCFC they will see throughout the season.  Only time will tell.  At the same time, the Pigeons have a chance to earn more points when they welcome the San Jose Earthquakes to the Bronx.  The Western Conference side has had some stellar performances but has struggled to get positive results.  They currently sit in 13th place with 11 points, while the home team is third in the Eastern Conference with 26 points.

Notably, NYCFC shot up the table due to their last eight matches.  The Bronx side must continue to play well to stay near the top.  Otherwise, any regression could lead the Boys in Blue to fall.  They also do not want to lose to San Jose, for they would have to sit on that for a couple of weeks.  The international break is coming up, so three points against a struggling team would be ideal.

Yet, the Earthquakes are a huge threat in the goal-scoring department. The visitors have scored two or more goals in four of their seven matches in May.  This includes all competitions.  They have also beaten Los Angeles FC and the Colorado Rapids, proving they can get wins from top teams.  NYCFC will have to be on their toes defensively to earn all three points.

Final Notes

Since San Jose can score goals, Nick Cushing should go with a more defensive backline.  In other words, he should start Tayvon Gray over Mitja Ilenič.  Gray has also had two assists over his last two matches, so this would be a great fixture to keep him in the Starting XI.
