NYCFC vs Portland Timbers: Time and how to watch the 2024 Home Opener

The time has finally arrived.  New York City FC will play in their home opener this weekend, taking on the Portland Timbers.  The Rose City side has the historical edge over the Bronx side, for the visitors have won five of the previous eight meetings.

Of course, NYCFC defeated Portland via penalties in the 2021 MLS Cup.  In their last matchup in 2023, the two teams ended in a 1-1 draw.  So, not only will the Pigeons look to get their first win of 2024 in front of the home crowd, but they will seek to better their record against the Timbers. One win in all fixtures is problematic.

Meanwhile, as exciting as the home opener is, many supporters have a dampened spirit. The rough start to the season already has Cushing Out all over social media.  Plus, the lack of offensive quality has been a killer.  NYCFC can have a decent game on the pitch, but that does not matter when goals do not arrive.  The same problems from last year remain, and that is reducing the excitement levels for Saturday’s match.

Nonetheless, there is nothing better than the ability to go to a home match.  Supporters can celebrate together or be angry together.  Plus, the home opener always feels special.  It tells the community that soccer is back.  NYCFC is playing again.
