After declaring New York is blue, New York City FC will have a short turnaround as they will host a Wednesday matchup.  The Bronx team recently beat the New York Red Bulls in the Hudson River Derby after a superb 5-1 win.  Offensively, they dominated their rivals, especially after scoring four in the first half.  The win will ideally boost the boys’ confidence, for they have a tough challenge ahead of them midweek.

With Yankee Stadium and Citi Field not available for Wednesday, NYCFC will welcome FC Cincinnati to Red Bull Arena.  This will be the second-to-last home match of the Major League Soccer regular season and the home side wants to win.  However, the Ohio side is having a better season and sits in third place in the Eastern Conference.  They are 12 points ahead of the Pigeons.

Moreover, NYCFC has not beaten Cincinnati since 2021 and has lost the last five matches in all competitions since 2023.  The drive to win is at an all-time high, but more importantly, there will be the want for revenge.  The teams last met in the Leagues Cup, and the Boys in Blue were up 2-0 in the 79th minute.  Unfortunately, a defensive collapse allowed Cincinnati to wake up, and they scored four to win 4-2.  This was up there as one of the worst losses of the season, including the recent Philadelphia Union loss.

For the first time in a long time, it does feel like NYCFC could come away with a win.  The team will need to shut down the likes of Luciano Acosta, Yuya Kubo, and Luca Orellano.  The three are the top scorers on the team, with 12, 10, and 10 respectively.  Matt Freese and his backline will probably have a lot of work to do defensively.

Final Notes

Due to the recent trends against Cincinnati, NYCFC could lose this game.  Again, there is this feeling in the air that they could win.  If the Pigeons do not, then supporters should not get entirely up in arms about the result.  There are two more matches afterward against teams the Bronx side should beat.
