The summer is flying by as New York City FC and the majority of the Major League Soccer teams will resume regular season play this weekend.  The teams paused for the Leagues Cup, in which the Pigeons made it to the quarterfinals before losing to the Columbus Crew in penalty kicks.

Now, they will begin the last part of the MLS season when they welcome Chicago Fire FC.  The sides finished their July match in a 0-0 draw, so the Pigeons will aim to grab all three points this time around.

It cannot be stressed enough how critical it is for NYCFC to beat the Fire.  With five of their last nine games at home, the Pigeons must start the final stretch off well.  The team’s home stadiums need to become places opposing teams fear to play in, regardless of which one.  To take anything less than three points in this game would be a failure on many levels.

It is time to get back into the swing of things with MLS play.  Here is a preview of the game between NYCFC and the Chicago Fire.

Date

NYCFC’s game against the Chicago Fire will take place on Saturday, August 24.

Time

The fixture is at 7:30 PM ET.

Location

The match will take place at Citi Field in Queens, NY.

How to watch

Supporters can watch the game on Apple TV via the MLS Season Pass.  It will be available for free on Apple.

Weather

Fans who attend the game should have a nice night.  It will be around 77 degrees and sunny, with clear skies when the sun sets.  It will be slightly windy as well.  More importantly, there will be no threat of rain.

Injury report

NYCFC will be without two players: Malachi Jones (right leg) and Andrés Perea (right leg).

Players to watch

NYCFC fans should watch Maxi Moralez.  The midfielder has been incredible since he returned from his ACL injury.  He is proving that age is merely a number, for he is still one of the best players on the team at 37.  His ability to dictate the midfield and improve those around him increases the threat of the Pigeons, especially in the attacking half.

On Chicago, fans should again watch Hugo Cuypers.  The forward’s goal tally still sits at nine goals, making him the most threatening on the team.  He did not play in the Leagues Cup, so he will be hungry to get back on the scoresheet.  If the Pigeons can hamper his play, then this will help them keep Chicago off the scoresheet.

Prediction

This is a must-win game, and truthfully, NYCFC can easily beat the Fire at home.  Hence, the prediction is that they will win, 2-0.  Matt Freese will secure the win by putting on a spectacular performance.
