NJ/NY Gotham FC might have a strong roster, but goal-scoring struggles to start the NWSL season have the Bats with a 1-1-1 record.  They have scored just twice so far, including in the 1-1 draw against the Kansas City Current.  Some might argue there are too many injuries, which there are.  However, the team should be doing a little better.  Hopefully, the fantastic second half from last weekend is the confidence booster the players needed.

Now, they will head to Washington, D.C. to play a vital fixture against the Washington Spirit.  The team from the District has a 3-1-0 record, winning their last three games after opening the year with a loss.  This will be a difficult match, so Gotham FC must be focused and ready to go when the opening whistle blows.

Part of the reason why it will be a challenge is due to the players on Washington.  USWNT stars Trinity Rodman and Andi Sullivan are game-changer players who can create a difference in a fixture.  One cannot forget about the veteran Casey Krueger, who is one of the better full-backs in the league.  Then, Ouleymata Sarr can be extremely threatening up front and in the center.  The Spirit’s talent has meshed well together to start 2024, meaning the Gotham defense will be extremely busy.

However, they were able to limit the Current to one goal.  Perhaps the team will find a way to steal a win on the road like they did in Portland in the season opener.  Based on last weekend, there is no question that Crystal Dunn and Jenna Nighswonger should start.  They came on as substitutes in the second half and changed the match to where Gotham FC dominated the game.  Can they do the same in D.C. and score enough goals to win?
