The nine-game unbeaten run ended for NJ/NY Gotham FC when the Washington Spirit sadly defeated them 2-0 last weekend. It was not the best match, resulting in a red card for Yazmeen Ryan. With injuries impacting the attack as of late, the team desperately needs a few of the players to be off the injury report. The depth of the team is strong, but it is already thin enough due to the injuries.
Hopefully, Gotham FC will rebound and end their homestand with a win. In addition, this will be their Olympic send-off match, for six players are heading to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Five are a part of the 18-player squad: Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn, Rose Lavelle, Jenna Nighswonger, and Emily Sonnett. Then, Lynn Williams is an alternate. Perhaps the NWSL all-time leading goal scorer is close to returning.
So, there will be plenty to celebrate. At the same time, they will play the 2023 NWSL Championship rematch against Seattle Reign FC. The 13th-place team is struggling immensely this year, for they only have two wins and are winless in the last seven. This is a major change from their fourth-place finish last season. Is it possible the loss of players like Lavelle and Sonnett made that much of a difference? There was a lot of roster turnover and their star and long-term player Megan Rapinoe retired.
That is why this match is a must-win for Gotham FC. They must take advantage of the struggling Seattle and get back on track. This will also be the last NWSL home game until August 24 and the last time at Red Bull Arena until August 2. Since many players are heading to Paris, this will be the last home fixture with everyone together until after the Olympics as well.

Everyone is still waiting to hear whether the attacking players are healthy. The most important thing is that nobody else is added to the injury list. Gotham FC needs the list to decrease significantly.
