NJ/NY Gotham FC will begin their 2024 NWSL campaign when they open up the season in Oregon against Portland Thorns FC. The Bats began the season when they played in the NWSL Challenge Cup against the San Diego Wave. Unfortunately, the ladies lost 1-0 after a late goal. Nonetheless, it was not the end of the world, for the team will likely need some time to gel together with the new players.
The last time Gotham was in Portland, they beat the home side in the NWSL Playoffs to book their place in the finals. Therefore, the expectation is that the Thorns will be seeking revenge. Truthfully, they are normally a difficult side to play against, but this will make the Bats’ NWSL opener even more challenging.
Also, this will mark Crystal Dunn’s return to Portland since she left to join Gotham FC. It has only been a few months, but that first return will be interesting to watch. How will the fans react? Will Dunn be welcomed back, or will there be a negative reaction? The USWNT was fantastic for the Rose City team, so it would be shocking if she did not get a warm reaction.
This will be a critical game though for Gotham FC. After losing the Challenge Cup, it would be bad for the team to lose their NWSL opener. The pressure will be immense this entire season. With the stacked roster, the NJ/NY team is expected to be one of the best teams in the league. Success is the only option for the 2024 campaign.
