When NJ/NY Gotham FC last faced the North Carolina Courage, it was in the quarterfinals of the NWSL playoffs. The Bats shocked everyone when they won by a convincing 2-0 scoreline. This started the team’s journey to their first-ever NWSL Championship.
Since then, the roster has improved with all of the new signings. This was put on display in the NWSL opener against Portland Thorns FC, whom Gotham beat in the NWSL semifinals. Thanks to a fantastic Esther González goal, the NJ/NY team won the first three points of the season.
Now, they will continue their travels as they face North Carolina. Like Sunday’s fixture, this will be a challenging battle. The Courage is a strong side with players like Denise O’Sullivan, Casey Murphy, and Ashley Sanchez. They have won a match and lost one so far in 2024. Notably, they are a hard team to beat at home, so will the Bats find a way to win their second away fixture in a row?
Meanwhile, Midge Purce was substituted off late in the first half during Gotham FC’s 1-0 win over Portland. It was announced on Wednesday that the winger tore her ACL and will be out for the rest of the year. This is a huge blow to the Bats, but thankfully they have the depth that they do. In addition, Lynn Williams and Rose Lavelle might miss the match too, for they were not included with the USWNT call-ups.
