NJ/NY Gotham FC is in the midst of their 2024 preseason. Here is the next news roundup for the 2023 NWSL Champions.
Gotham FC roundup: Preseason training and Svava Guðmundsdóttir
Training in Florida and a preseason game
Gotham FC is currently in Florida for the first part of their preseason. The ladies are in the early stages of their training, and will soon lose a few players as they depart for the USWNT camp for the Gold Cup. Luckily, some of the new players had time to build chemistry with their teammates.
At the same time, the Bats played a preseason friendly against the Chicago Red Stars. They did not release too much information about the match other than it was played. It is unknown whether they won.
It would be nice if Gotham released more information about their preseason, including updates about the game against Chicago. For example, did the two teams play the full 90 minutes? Or was it more of a combined training exercise? Perhaps information will be released at their next press conference.
Questions surround Svava Guðmundsdóttir
On Friday, Gotham FC announced that Svava Guðmundsdóttir has returned from her loan with SL Benfica. The Icelandic player will not rejoin the Bats, for she has an excused absence.
This does not clarify whether she will return at all or whether her time with the NJ/NY side has come to an end. The club did not say they terminated the contract. Hence, one could assume she will not be with the team for the time being.
Nonetheless, there are questions as to why Guðmundsdóttir is stepping away. It could be due to a health issue, but the Bats probably would have mentioned that. Only time will tell whether the forward plays another game for Gotham FC. Hopefully, everything is okay.
