New York City FC is currently in the midst of their Leagues Cup journey while the Major League Soccer season is on a break. They beat Querétaro F.C. via a penalty kick shootout to earn two points. In addition, the Liga MX side lost to FC Cincinnati, so the Pigeons are moving on to the knockout stage. As such, they are guaranteed one more Leagues Cup match this month.
It is unknown though how many games NYCFC will play in August. It all depends on how far the Pigeons go in the Leagues Cup. They will aim to have a better month compared to July. They only won one game, which was at home against CF Montréal. Thankfully, once MLS resumes, the team will play five of their final nine games at home. There is no question the team has to win after some poor road games over the last two months.
Right now, NYCFC will play four matches in August. Here is a look at the schedule, which includes the Leagues Cup and MLS fixtures.
NYCFC's August 2024 schedule
Monday, August 5: NYCFC vs FC Cincinnati
Despite the early dominance by NYCFC when FC Cincinnati came to MLS, the Ohio side has now won the last four games in all competitions against the Pigeons. The recent record and the problems on the road make it difficult to see the Bronx team coming away with any points in this game. Plus, Cincinnati is one of the better teams in the league, for they sit in second place in the Eastern Conference. They have one of the best midfielders, Luciano Acosta, and a stronger roster. At least the Boys in Blue already know they are through to the next round.
August 7-9 TBD: Game TBD
As mentioned, NYCFC will move on in the Leagues Cup regardless of the result against Cincinnati. They do not know which team they will face and when. Since their second and final match of the group round will be on August 5, fans can assume it will be on the 8th or 9th.
Saturday, August 24: NYCFC vs Chicago Fire FC
Unless NYCFC goes on a run and makes the Leagues Cup final, the team will resume play MLS against Chicago Fire FC at home. They recently met in Chicago and played to a 0-0 draw. On paper, the Pigeons should have won, so hopefully they will do so in front of their fan base. At the same time, perhaps there will be a few changes to the roster by the time this game is played. Although, the club is not expected to make too many moves. This will be the match to watch in case anyone new is with the team.
Saturday, August 31: NYCFC vs the Columbus Crew
NYCFC will finish the month with an away game against the Columbus Crew. The Boys in Blue tend to struggle when they play in Columbus, so this will be another difficult road match. The Crew seems to be on some form of surge right now. They have won five of their last seven MLS games and even beat Premier League team Aston Villa F.C. in a friendly. This is not the time to play the other Ohio team; NYCFC must play their best football to leave with any points.
