The 2023 season saw quite a bit of roster turnover for New York City FC. Many star players departed the club. Some moves made sense, while others were shocking, like when Maxime Chanot left. There were also some new signings. Some have worked out and others have not.
One player that was new to NYCFC this season was Braian Cufré. The left-back joined the Pigeons on loan from RCD Mallorca. There is an option to buy.
The future of Braian Cufré is questionable
This year, Cufré has been one of the stronger players on the NYCFC roster. Defensively, he is a decent defender. However, his offensive abilities were something the team missed in 2022. He is extremely capable of moving into the final third and putting the ball into the box. Additionally, he has two goals and four assists in Major League Soccer.
For most of the season, Cufré was a part of the Starting XI. For some reason, Nick Cushing has recently gone with Kevin O'Toole. Cufré has been on the bench for the last four matches and has played a mere minute during that time.
Truthfully, it was questioned as to why Cushing chose O'Toole over Cufré. The American has grown over the last year. Yet, the Argentine is still the more talented left-back. Therefore, does Cushing know something about his future, and that is why Cufré has been on the bench?
Also, does the head coach think that O'Toole is the better option? If that is the case, then the probability of the loaned defender staying with NYCFC is decreasing.
Cufré came to the club to be the starting left-back. Competition is always a part of soccer, but the Argentine might request the club not to exercise the option to buy if he is not in the starter plans for 2024.
New York City FC will have a lot of decisions to make once the season officially ends. Will Cufré remain with the club? Only time will tell.
