The USWNT played Zambia to open up the group round of the Summer Olympics. Of course, this meant NJ/NY Gotham FC was well featured, for all six players appeared for the national team. Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn, and Rose Lavelle started the game. Lynn Williams then came on at the end of the first half while Jenna Nighswonger and Emily Sonnett were subbed on about halfway through the second half. Some of the Gotham ladies had great performances against Zambia.

After three goals in the first half, the USWNT held on to win 3-0. It was a good win that allowed heavy rotation throughout. The Olympics feature only two rest days between matches; this was vital for Emma Hayes' side. It is also why all six Gotham players received significant minutes.

The best performance was by Lavelle. She only played in the first half, which was expected due to her knock before the last send-off game. Her impact was notable. She easily helped move the ball up the pitch but also would chase and regain possession for the USWNT. The midfielder was also involved in Mallory Swanson's second goal, for her pass led to Sophia Smith's assist to Swanson.

Meanwhile, Dunn made her 150th appearance for the USWNT. The Gotham FC player thankfully celebrated her achievement in style by winning the game. Hayes also utilized her as a left-back and right-winger, switching her based on changes made to the player personnel.

When all was said and done, the USWNT should have had more goals after 27 shots and eight on target. Zambia did well though to block their chances and limit the strong chances on goal. The US dominated the match, but it was not perfect. The weekend matchup against Germany will be the game that shows where Hayes' team is at.

It will also be interesting to see whether Hayes starts Nighswonger in such a big game. She has the talent to compete in those matches, but perhaps the Gotham FC left-back will see more minutes off the bench this summer. Moreover, she came on as a forward against Zambia, so maybe she will earn more minutes in the final third. She is a natural forward after all.

It will be exciting to watch all of the Gotham FC players with the USWNT as the Olympics continue. Fans cannot forget about Ann-Katrin Berger too, who had a clean sheet in Germany's opening game.
