Back in 2020, it was a little bit of a shock when Alexandru Mitriță left New York City FC on loan. Since then, he was continuously loaned out, but in a sense, was still a part of the club. Rather, he was loaned out to Al-Ahli Saudi FC, PAOK FC, and Al-Raed FC.
Alexandru Mitriță is finally leaving NYCFC
Now, after all of this time, the former Designated Player is gone for good, or at least will be, for he is still listed on the team's roster. While NYCFC has not announced anything, Mitriță has returned to the club that the Pigeons first got him from: CS Universitatea Craiova.
The Romanian confirmed this news himself, stating he has signed a three year contract. In addition, his new but old club also announced his return via Facebook. It is unknown whether this move involves NYCFC selling the player, or whether he is signing as a free agent. In addition, it is likely the deal will only be valid starting July 1. The details are cloudy, but there is no doubt about it: Mitriță is no longer a NYCFC player.
Meanwhile, the Pigeons have yet to make any formal announcement. Again, it could be due to the fact the forward has not been formally presented, which will occur on Tuesday. At the same time, it could be due to the fact the move is not yet official based on timing. Per Transfermarkt, the player is still said to be loaned out to Al-Raed. This is understandable, for his loan deal was until June 30.
More importantly, his contract with NYCFC, as per Transfermarkt, is through December of 2024. Hence, either the future Queens team is selling the player, or there was an agreement to terminate the contract. Whether there will be answers to this is yet to be seen, but hopefully supporters will know more in the future.
Nonetheless, Mitriță has had an interesting journey since joining New York City FC. Hopefully his move back to Romania will allow for some stability, and that he will no longer be the journeyman that he has been over the last few years.
Note that Skyscraper Blues will update this if information is released by the club.
7/4 Update: Per Transfermarkt, Mitriță is officially a player for Craiova. The website shows that the Romanian made the move on a free transfer.
