New York City FC. The Boys in Blue. The team from the Bronx and also Queens. The Pigeons.

NYCFC is known by many names, but if there is one nickname many refer to them as, then it is the Pigeons. The usage of the bird to describe the team has slowly grown over time, and rightfully so. The pigeon is a staple of New York City, for they are everywhere. There is something different about a pigeon in the city compared to pigeons elsewhere in the country.

So, when NYCFC began posting hints about a pigeon, there was the question about whether it would be about a mascot. After all, the nickname is prevalent among many of the supporters. In addition, there was a call for fans to enter their input on what the team mascot should be, leaving hope that the 10th anniversary would finally lead to one.

NYCFC needs to name the pigeon as the mascot

Instead, the lead-up to Tuesday was revealed by the club, and sadly, it is not about a mascot. Rather, it is about a five-story-tall inflatable pigeon that will be floating around the city in honor of the Club World Cup and NYCFC.

While the club called the pigeon the "unofficial mascot", there is no question that some will feel a little let down by the announcement. It is cool, though, for the Bronx team will have the pigeon float all around the five boroughs until it reaches Queens. It is a way to remind those in the city and visitors who the local team is, especially those here for the Club World Cup.

At the same time, this could be an absolute waste. People might not care or think this is the most ridiculous thing in the world.

So, NYCFC, why not give fans what they want? It is not too late to declare the pigeon as the official mascot. The club can even wait to debut the mascot next year, giving supporters time to vote on the official look and name. As New Yorkers know, not all city pigeons look the same.

Perhaps the team can even have two pigeon mascots to express that, with one being a boy and another a girl. It can be like Mr. and Mrs. Met for the Mets or Moonchester and Moonbeam for Manchester City FC.

No matter what, NYCFC should name their mascot, and it should be a pigeon. Let's not waste any more time.
