On Wednesday, New York City FC entered North Carolina with some confidence. The team ended the winless streak in Major League Soccer, beating the Columbus Crew over the weekend. As such, the Pigeons wanted to start their road trip in style by getting all three points against Charlotte FC. It was not easy, but the Bronx side secured the three points, winning 1-0.
Pascal Jansen ended up putting out the same starting lineup from Sunday, but there was a slight difference. Hannes Wolf, who was the hero against the Crew, noticeably spent more time toward the center of the attack.
It did not lead to a goal for Wolf, but he did register an assist. This was also not the best offensive performance when it came to actual shots. The Boys in Blue were somewhat poor, but the attacking quality in the sequences was well done.
There was some fear when the match began, for the Crown was the team that came out ready to go. They were the side with the possession, and did well to close down NYCFC players. However, that did not last long.
NYCFC wins on the road
In the eighth minute, Agustín Ojeda, who was on the left, found Wolf in the center-back of the box. The Austrian could not get a shot off due to players closing in on him, so he used the distraction to send the ball to Nicolás Fernández Mercau on the right. The Designated Player had room, but still had to maneuver through some defenders. Dancing, he created a path toward the goal and shot the ball.
Now, Charlotte’s goalkeeper, Kristijan Kahlina, was a menace during the fixture in the Big Apple. He was a major reason why NYCFC lost, and he is one of the better goalkeepers in MLS. But at that moment, he failed to get his body on the ball, and it slid into the goal. Truthfully, this was a save he could have made, but Fernández Mercau’s tricky feet made all the difference.

After the goal, the home side had multiple opportunities where they spent too much time in the final third, getting corner kick after corner kick, and forcing Thiago Martins and his backline into overdrive. Their defense, especially the clearances and forcing the ball out, took pressure off Matt Freese. Somehow, despite the set pieces, the Pigeons survived the offensive pressure.
Both teams would continue to have their chances, including Ojeda’s 1 v 1 opportunity against Kahlina. The winger received the ball in his own half and outran every Charlotte player all the way toward the goal. He should have put the Boys in Blue up 2-0, but instead sent the ball wide of the goal in the 42nd minute.
Immediately after, Freese was forced to make a huge save when Pep Biel's shot forced him off his line and to become big. There were concerns after, for he was struggling with his leg. Thankfully, he was okay and able to come out for the second half.
Notably, the chances in front of the goal were still few and far between. NYCFC and Charlotte’s defenses did well in limiting each other’s shooting opportunities. The offensive quality was still there, though, for each spent time in the attack, creating sequences that would have been brilliant if they ended in goals.
But in the second half, there was a little too much stop-and-go play to start. Multiple whistles were blown, and free kicks were given. The pace of play was slow, for the most part, until about halfway through the second set of 45 minutes.
Afterward, things became a little livelier again, with limited shots. But arguably, NYCFC had to focus more on the defense, for the home team was desperate for a goal. It did not become shot after shot, but rather the backline and the entire team working together to limit the danger on Freese.
As the minutes went by, there was that nagging question hovering over NYCFC. Could the team hold on to the one-goal lead? Would they falter at the end like they have done so in a few matches in 2026?
Unquestionably, fans breathed a sigh of relief when the final whistle was blown, and the Pigeons walked away with all three points. This match was full of beautiful play, as well as ugly and gritty moments. But NYCFC won on the road, and they have now won back-to-back games.
