Last week, New York City FC celebrated the team’s tenth anniversary in Major League Soccer. There were celebrations before the game and after, for the Pigeons defeated Orlando City SC 2-1 thanks to Alonso Martínez and Hannes Wolf. That was the first win of the season and also Pascal Jansen’s first in the league. It was a stronger performance compared to the first two matches as well, and fans saw a superb first start by 17-year-old Jonathan Shore.
Meanwhile, the celebrations will continue this weekend when NYCFC plays against the New England Revolution. This match will be the tenth anniversary, to the day, of the Bronx side’s first home opener. Funny enough, it was against the Revolution, and the Pigeons won 2-0 on that memorable day at Yankee Stadium. Therefore, they will want to celebrate the anniversary by winning their second match in a row.
Plus, NYCFC has the edge over the Revolution recently. They beat them in both regular season games in 2024 and knocked the team out of the Leagues Cup via a penalty kick shootout. Their last loss to the Massachusetts team was in September 2022, and that is the only loss in the previous three years.
While New England arguably has a stronger roster this year, many believe they will finish at the bottom of the table. They are 0-2-1 with one point after three fixtures, while NYCFC is 1-1-1. It is expected that the Pigeons will win, but anything can happen. Plus, they are still adjusting to Jansen’s tactics, so growing pains will exist over the next month or two. At the very least, the Boys in Blue will have the advantage of playing at home.

Final Notes
There is no question that Jansen must start Shore again. The young Homegrown was incredible against Orlando and played like a seasoned pro. He might have played most of his games in the central midfield, but his versatility is why he might be a strong possibility as the James Sands replacement.
