The MLS Cup Playoffs will continue this weekend, and New York City FC will play their second match against FC Cincinnati. The Queens team lost the first game in Ohio but now will have a chance to win in front of their fans. They must win the fixture too. Otherwise, they will find themselves out of the postseason.
Unquestionably, NYCFC cannot play like they did in the first playoff game against FC Cincinnati. The Pigeons were awful offensively and were not threatening by any means. The 1-0 loss could have been a win if the team tapped into the magic that saw them beat the Orange and Blue at home in early October. Yes, they were stronger defensively this time around in the first match of the Round One Best-of-3 series. But it is better to give up more goals and win rather than not score at all.
Meanwhile, it is vital for Nick Cushing to start Maxi Moralez. The head coach made the mistake of not starting the veteran player. His absence was seen in the first half. When he came on in the second, the midfield improved significantly. Plus, the Argentine can increase the Pigeons’ opportunities in the attack. Moralez might be 37, but he still plays extremely well. Cushing cannot keep him on the bench.
Fans already know there will be at least one change. Mitja Ilenič will play over Tayvon Gray due to the right-back’s red card from the first match. Cushing should also not wait until the end of the game to bring on other attackers. If NYCFC is tied or losing at halftime, then substitutes should be made.
