It has been a long and crazy season for New York City FC. There have been highs and lows. The team has been through great streaks like their winning streak in the spring and then the winless streak over the summer. Recently, thanks to the Hudson River Derby win that ended their poor part of the Major League Soccer season, the Boys in Blue have won three games in a row.

Now, it is time for Match 34. Decision Day is here, and NYCFC will play their final game against CF Montréal. The Pigeons are in the playoffs but are trying to get fourth place to ensure home-field advantage in the Round One Best-of-3 series of the MLS Cup playoffs. They will need a little help, for Orlando City SC has to lose and the Bronx side must win. At the very least, a win in Montréal will ensure a fifth-place finish in the Eastern Conference.

At the same time, the Canadian team is fighting to make the playoffs. They are barely in ninth place, and anything less than a win could see their postseason hopes evaporate. Therefore, this is expected to be a tough battle for NYCFC. Sure, they have only lost twice to Montréal and last lost in 2021. This match is different though, for so much is on the line.

NYCFC has to be at the top of their game this weekend. Nick Cushing must start his best possible Starting XI. Players like Maxi Moralez, James Sands, and Hannes Wolf are easy decisions, but there might be a question about the backline. Will he start Birk Risa? Or will someone else step in for the player who has struggled since his injury?

Final Notes

As mentioned, this will be a difficult Decision Day battle.  There is hope the recent past will repeat itself.  The Pigeons won their last four games against Montréal in the regular season and playoffs.  They won the home fixture in 2024 2-0, so ideally, NYCFC will continue their recent success against the Canadian team.
