NYCFC signs defender Matt Miazga on a smart and no-risk deal

New York City FC's not-so-great season can be boiled down to a few things: injuries, mistakes, and bad luck. Without any question, the players have played below their expected level as well. So, at this point, it would make sense for the club to try to do something to help the roster, including bringing in an available player before the roster freeze. That is why it is not shocking that the Boys in Blue have a new signing.

On Tuesday, NYCFC announced that the club had signed Matt Miazga through the 2026 season. The Bronx team claimed him off waivers after the center-back was released by FC Cincinnati, where he made 108 appearances over five seasons.

Miazga has not had his best year, and clearly he has not been the same player that Major League Soccer fans have been used to in the past. However, this move comes at no risk, as the defender is only signed through the end of the year. That means the next few months will act as a test to see whether he can play well with the rest of the squad.

At the same time, NYCFC can see what he will be like off the pitch. The defender has been rumored to sometimes have an attitude problem. If he can prove his professionalism and not let his former New York Red Bull self get in the way, then perhaps he can be the perfect veteran signing. After all, his experience can be valuable to the younger players on the roster.

More importantly, if it does not work out, then NYCFC can say goodbye to him at the end of the 2026 campaign. Hopefully, from a soccer standpoint, it does work out. Miazga might just need a change of scenery to elevate his playing level again.

Plus, former NYCFC player Strahinja Tanasijević, who left in June, was never the player that fans wanted him to be. Miazga's signing acts as a replacement, and possibly he could be better than the other center-back. It is not hard to do that, for the newest player could be a solid depth piece, and that would automatically make him an upgrade. And who knows? Perhaps the new home will lead Miazga to compete for a starting role.

Of course, from the perspective of NYCFC fans, this move might feel odd. After all, the center-back was originally a Red Bull player. It might have only been one year that he faced the Pigeons in the rivalry, but the rivalry blood always seemed to thrive within him. Nevertheless, he was willing to join the sky blue side, so that must mean something.

This is a good deal, though, for both Miazga and NYCFC. If the move works, then great. If not, then there is no harm in trying.
