Every day that goes by means that New York City FC is closer to the 2026 season. The offseason has not been the craziest by any means, with Justin Haak being the biggest departure. Then, all of the signings or re-signings have been players affiliated with the Boys in Blue. There is also the question of how the team will play with a few players missing due to injury, with most of the focus on Alonso Martínez's absence.
As always, there is plenty to cover while the preseason continues and as the Pigeons prepare to play their first friendly this weekend. Therefore, here is the next NYCFC news roundup.
Todd Dunivant had his first NYCFC press conference
NYCFC's new sporting director, Todd Dunivant, had his first press conference for the club on Tuesday. He mainly spoke about the preseason and the players on the roster.
One thing that was notable was that Dunivant expressed how Talles Magno has done well with "integrating in with the group" and that he has a "blank slate". He also mentioned how he already has an MLS Cup ring and that the club hopes he "will add another one." In addition, Dunivant talked about the Brazilian's versatility and how he can help the attack.
These statements make it easy to assume that NYCFC is truly considering Magno as an option for the 2026 season. It would be great if he could return and become a vital player on the squad.
Additionally, the sporting director mentioned that a priority for the Bronx side is to find attacking help since Martínez will be out for some time. So, having Magno and bringing in a new attacking player who can score goals would be very helpful.
Will Julián Fernández leave NYCFC?
Unfortunately, the Julián Fernández rumors will not go away. Reports continue to surround the winger that Brazilian club São Paulo Futebol Clube still wants to sign the Argentine. The offer that is supposedly on the table is a loan deal with an option to buy, and was formally submitted by the team.
At the same time, there is another club that is interested in Fernández as well. Club Atlético Rosario Central in Argentina would also like the NYCFC player to join them, and apparently, the Pigeons will leave the decision up to the player. Of course, another attacker or two must be brought in if Fernández desires to leave.
