New York City FC is having a good preseason so far. The team is 2-0-2 after beating newcomer San Diego FC 3-1 after some fantastic goals. As of today, most of the team is still with the club, with the biggest departure being James Sands, who is out on loan.

As such, especially with the hiring of the new head coach, Pascal Jansen, this has been a good offseason and preseason. However, another big-name departure might be on the horizon. So, since there are some rumors to discuss, here is another NYCFC news roundup.

NYCFC news roundup: Rumors

The Santiago Rodríguez rumors gained more steam

A few days ago, rumors about Santiago Rodríguez possibly leaving NYCFC began to take shape. At first, it was reported that Brazilian club Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas was interested in the player, but the Bronx side's asking price was too high. However, that sigh of relief quickly went away, for reports are now saying that an agreement for the midfielder's transfer is close.

Reporter César Luis Merlo reported on Sunday that the Brazilian club is in "advanced negotiations" with NYCFC. Apparently, there is an agreement with Rodríguez for a four-year contract. In addition, Fernando Asvolinsque of Esporte News Mundo is also reporting that the Pigeons are negotiating with Botafogo and that a deal is close.

Meanwhile, there were also reports that Argentine club Club Estudiantes de La Plata was interested in Rodríguez. There have been no reports about any advancements with that rumor.

Losing Rodríguez would be tough for NYCFC. The club would unlikely properly replace him, and that would mean that the team would rely more on Maxi Moralez. There are wingers that can play on the wings, but Rodríguez plays at another level. Plus, he tends to play as the attacking midfielder when Moralez is not on the pitch. This is not a great move at this time, especially if there is no replacement lined up.

Is NYCFC interested in Nampalys Mendy?

Finally, after a mostly quiet offseason for rumors, NYCFC is being linked to some players. The biggest name is defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy. According to RMC Sport, the Bronx side is interested in the Racing Club de Lens player. Other clubs are pursuing him too, so if NYCFC wants to sign him, then they will have to act fast. Alas, there is nothing concrete other than the fact the team is interested.
