The last few months have gone by quickly since New York City FC played in the Eastern Conference Finals in the MLS Cup Playoffs. Now, the team is about one week away from playing in the first game of the 2026 Major League Soccer season. The offseason and preseason have not been the craziest, with Justin Haak's departure being the biggest move regarding arrivals and departures. For the most part, the majority of last year's side is back.
The MLS Kickoff is close, but like always, the items to cover about the team never stop. Here is another NYCFC news roundup that includes Kai Trewin and more.
NYCFC lost in the second CVI game
NYCFC is set to play their third and final Coachella Valley Invitational game on Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes. They played the second match back on Wednesday, and Head Coach Pascal Jansen put out a starting lineup full of younger players and those who do not normally start. In the end, the Pigeons fell 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City. Seymour Reid scored the lone goal via a penalty kick.
It was not the best match, but this was a perfect time for the head coach to look at his other players. Remember, there are some starting spots available due to a few departures and injuries. Fans should not be worried about the loss. Plus, despite the 1-1 draw against Los Angeles FC, there were positives in that fixture.
Saturday's match against the San Jose Earthquakes will ideally paint a more concise picture of where NYCFC stands entering the final days of the preseason.
Kai Trewin is officially here
The Bronx side's most recent signing, Kai Trewin, is officially stateside and has joined the team in the preseason. The Australian has been training with his new teammates for the last few days and even did his first video interview. It was there that he told fans that he is an aggressive defender who can play in the midfield, leaving the question of where Jansen will play him open for discussion.
Trewin also revealed that when he thinks of NYCFC, he thinks about the culture of the club. He sees how everyone is close, but mentioning the culture also highlights what Jansen has done in the past year.
The good news is that Trewin should be good to go for the season opener against the LA Galaxy. It would be great for him to adjust to NYCFC quickly and hit the ground running.
NYCFC loaned player Julián Fernández has scored
Julián Fernández, who is out on loan with Club Atlético Rosario Central, has already scored his first goal. The winger scored in the Copa Argentina for his new team on Wednesday. His run into the box, and the perfect pass made it easy for the Argentine to score by kicking the ball with one touch.
It is good to see that the NYCFC forward is having success out on loan in a short period of time. Hopefully, he will be successful and grow as a player over the next year.
