NYCFC news roundup: NYCFC II's future and Seymour Reid's loan

New York City FC might be in the middle of a winless streak, but the team has not been terrible. There has been some good play during this time, and the hope is that the Pigeons will break out of this results slump. After all, a good run heading into the postseason can make all the difference. But they have to make it there first.

In the meantime, after some moves and contract extensions this summer, NYCFC was quieter than expected. Perhaps the club has an eye on next summer with the schedule change and the opening of the stadium. With that said, they did make one final move, which will be discussed here. There was also a location move to discuss.

NYCFC II is on the move

NYCFC's MLS Next Pro side, NYCFC II, is on the move. The Baby Pigeons will officially relocate to Middlesex County in New Jersey next summer. Per the club, the team will be "given a new identity, including name, colors, and crest, to represent and reflect its local community."

The move and eventual name change are not shocking, since Major League Soccer wants the MLS Next Pro teams to have their own identity. Teams are relaunching through Hometown Soccer Holdings, which means there is a possibility that fans can no longer call the players the Baby Pigeons.

HSH sees the growth of MLS Next Pro Soccer by making these changes. In addition, "the strategic partnership is designed to support stadium development in new communities, create new Club brands for MLS-affiliated teams, and enhance the fan experience through high-energy matchday environments at fan-friendly venues with distinct local identities." Some fans might not be for it, but this will be a good move.

While there will be changes, NYCFC will still be responsible for their MLS Next Pro team. In a sense, NYCFC II and the other MLS Next Pro teams will not be like the development squads in Europe. Instead, they will be more like minor league baseball teams with their own identity.

More importantly, this will introduce more fans to local teams that they can cheer for. And if some become fans of the MLS Next Pro side, perhaps they will become fans of NYCFC as well.

NYCFC loans out Seymour Reid

Striker Seymour Reid has always had potential. After all, there was a reason he was signed to NYCFC II last season, and then signed to the first team as a Homegrown player two months later. However, there are too many players ahead of the young forward in the depth chart. He needs professional minutes outside of NYCFC II.

As a result, the Bronx club has loaned Reid out to Sporting Kansas City through May 2027. In return, the Pigeons will receive "$75,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM), with up to an additional $50,000 GAM" based on how the player performs with his new club. This is a good move, as it gives him a chance to play more. Moreover, KC is rebuilding and needs another forward.

At the same time, if Reid does not play, then they can recall him at the end of the 2026 campaign. Hence, this is a safe and smart deal for NYCFC and Reid.
