Kevin O'Toole's contract extension is good, but NYCFC needs another left-back

There is no question that New York City FC is building for the future and the venture into the team's new home at Etihad Park.  The club is about a year away, and there are expectations that the signings will become better over the next few years.  Also, the Pigeons want to retain some of their players as they continue to build.  So, it was not shocking to hear about a contract extension.

NYCFC announced on Thursday that Kevin O'Toole has extended his stay with the club.  The updated contract will keep him with the Boys in Blue through the 2028-2029 campaign, with an option for the 2029-2030 season.  As such, the left-back will remain in the Big Apple for the opening of Etihad Park

Similar to the return of James Sands, who decided to stay with NYCFC after his loan deal, this is a little surprising.  Of course, having Sands back means a lot after the Australian internationals came back injured from the World Cup.  Then, O'Toole is needed since he truly does not have a solid backup.

Kevin O'Toole will stay with NYCFC, but was it the right move?

With his contract expiring at the end of this year, his extension made sense in a way that he has been a consistent starter, excluding his injury, and has mostly done well for NYCFC.  However, there is the argument that he has not been as good in 2026 and has taken a step back.  Hence, perhaps waiting until the offseason to make sure that he is the left-back of the future would have made sense.  That is why this might have been an early decision.  Yes, the club would have likely had to compete with others for his signature.  However, if he wanted to leave, then he would have never signed the new deal.

Meanwhile, Nico Cavallo has been struggling to fill in for O'Toole and has not impressed as the backup.  Therefore, NYCFC must still search for another left-back.  Even a versatile defender who can play as a left-back well would do.  Raul Gustavo and others do not seem to be the answer.

Now, perhaps O'Toole has stepped back this year due to the lack of competition in his position.  It is a footballing argument as old as time, and really for any sport, that constant competition can make someone a better player.

The starter needs that, even if he remains as the starter.  Plus, the Pigeons should not be afraid to possibly upgrade from O'Toole.  After all, and while it can be painful to say this, professional sports are businesses.  Loyalty is important, but the willingness to continue playing someone when their level keeps dropping, or as Yankees fans know all too well, when they are just awful, is a dangerous game to play.

Thankfully, O'Toole is not there yet.  Nevertheless, NYCFC must think about the future and the possibility of the left-back not returning to his top form.  But still, while he has been good for the team, there is always someone better.  Ideally, though, when the defender returns from his injury, he will take the league by storm and play at his best.
