On Thursday, New York City FC fans received some unexpected but good news: James Sands, who has been out on loan with FC St. Pauli since January 2025, is back with the club. It was announced that he is not only back to help the team, but he also extended his contract, committing to the place that gave him his professional start.

This is an interesting decision since Sands is entirely capable of staying in Europe. Many would have assumed that NYCFC would have tried to find a permanent home for their first-ever Homegrown player. However, returning to the Bronx is also the right move for both parties.

It is good that James Sands is back with NYCFC

For starters, Sands is beloved by the fans. He grew up in front of their eyes and turned into a fantastic defensive midfielder. He also grew up into a very good young man. Supporters saw his leadership skills and kindness during NYCFC's 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Plus, he can play as a center-back when needed. Although, that position is clearly the weaker one. Still, his return brings in another versatile player. In addition, he is familiar with the team and the basic way the Boys in Blue play. Of course, he will have to adjust to Pascal Jansen, for the head coach joined the club around the same time that Sands left.

More importantly, the Pigeons currently need help defensively. The midfielder brings that help with him. Again, he is a defensive midfielder and is known for his defensive work. The Boys in Blue still need another defender or two, but at least Sands should aid in closing some of those gaps. Too many goals have been allowed this year, and too many mistakes have been made.

Looking at the roster, the defense should have been better leading up to the World Cup break. Of course, the high number of injuries in the last few weeks before the pause did not help. Nevertheless, the defense has not been the best.

Finally, having someone like Sands back with the club illuminates to some of the academy players that they could be like him one day. This can encourage them to sign with the club professionally and put in the work to become a star with the first team.

It also helps to have someone like Sands for when the new stadium opens next summer. Notably, with his talent, one cannot ever rule out a possible move to Europe, even in the upcoming offseason. Still, the intention appears to be that the player will remain with NYCFC for the time being. And, it is a reunion that many can be happy about.
