Shall it be repeated for the millionth time this season? Fans might be tired of hearing about this, as they know this is the case, but mistakes and the inability to keep leads have ultimately hurt New York City FC in 2026, and over the weekend was no different. The Pigeons had the lead against Chicago Fire FC and were up a man, but played a poor second half that saw the Fire score twice and win.
Now, the Boys in Blue must travel to Florida to take on Inter Miami CF. While the second-place Herons are not at the top of the Eastern Conference table, as there is a distance between Nashville SC and the Florida side, they still have a 13-5-10 record, with six games to go. In other words, it is possible to steal points from Miami, as teams like Atlanta United FC, San Diego FC, and Toronto FC have done this year.
However, looking back earlier in the season, NYCFC had a chance to earn a win or draw at home, but ultimately fell 3-2 to Miami. When one adds the consistency of dropping points this year and the difficulty of going to Miami, doing that seems like an impossible task. Again, look at what happened in Chicago, and then against Atlanta, and before then, against the New York Red Bulls. It has been the same old story over and over again.
As such, based on recent history against Miami and the 2026 season as a whole, it would not be shocking if the Herons dominate the match and obliterate the Pigeons. The game could easily get out of hand early on, and the NYCFC backline might give up four or five goals. It would take a miracle to earn a point. And no, that is not being a Debbie Downer. Rather, that is the reality of NYCFC.

Final notes
If there is one thing that Pascal Jansen should consider, then it is not playing Bénie Traoré at all. It does not matter whether he comes off the bench or starts; the Designated Player is not cutting it right now. There are other offensive players that the head coach can utilize instead of him, like Malachi Jones.
