Well, the unbeaten streak is over, and reality has arrived for NJ/NY Gotham FC. With just two points between them and the Washington Spirit for the NWSL Shield, the Bats must regroup and refocus on returning to winning ways. The ten-game unbeaten run ended last week, and now the team is in the middle of a three-match winless streak. The ladies do not want to extend this run. However, they have to beat Racing Louisville FC on the road to stop it.
The Kentucky side is never an easy matchup, regardless of the fact that they tend to be below the playoff line. The team is currently in 13th place, and they have lost their last three games, but that does not matter. Gotham FC only won 1-0 during the home fixture this year. In 12 NWSL meetings, the NJ/NY side has only won three times. The 3-3-6 record is not ideal against a team they should beat. Plus, the Bats lost in Louisville last season.
So, what needs to happen for the visitors to leave with three points? The answer is simple in one way. The backline and Ann-Katrin Berger must continue to be the top defensive side that they are, but study to see what went wrong against Denver Summit FC last weekend. Then, it might be smart to move Jaedyn Shaw back to the wings and bring back Guro Reiten to the left-back position. Funny enough, the team did extremely well with that left-side lineup. If Rose Lavelle is not ready, then perhaps someone else can start as the attacking midfielder.
More importantly, Sam Kerr has to start scoring regularly. Gotham FC desperately needs her to find the back of the net. After all, the team is lacking in the striker department. There is no one to truly replace the Australian if she does not do her job.
