Over the last few weeks, things have looked bleak for New York City FC.  The Boys in Blue only won one of their three Leagues Cup matches and then lost their last two Major League Soccer games.  Rather, the MLS matches were painful losses.  The one against the Philadelphia Union saw the Pigeons lose 3-2 after being up 2-0.  Then they almost secured a draw away from home against FC Cincinnati, but a late goal led to the loss.

Now, things do not get easier, as NYCFC will continue their road trip and face the New England Revolution.  The team currently sits in fourth place with 33 points and has gone 2-2-2 since the season resumed after the World Cup break.  However, they recently beat D.C. United in a convincing fashion, so that game might act as a spark.

Additionally, this will be somewhat of a reunion with a former NYCFC player.  Jack Harrison, who played with NYCFC in 2016 and 2017, recently signed with the Revolution, returning to MLS after he left for England in 2018.  It is somewhat of a reunion since NYCFC was his first professional club.  However, only Maxi Moralez and James Sands remain from 2017, and Moralez is injured, while Sands only signed his Homegrown contract in July of that season.

Nevertheless, while it will be good to see Harrison again, he is not in a sky-blue shirt.  He is in dark blue, and that is the team that the Pigeons must try to beat.  But again, things have not been great for the team as of late, and New England looks like a mountain that they will not be able to climb.

Final notes

Entering the match, it feels like NYCFC will not win or even earn a point.  Look at what happened in the FC Cincinnati game; they played well and lost late.  Hence, even if the Pigeons have a great performance, their inability to close out games is troubling.
