Picture this. The final whistle blows, the cheers are loud in Queens, and New York City FC has finally won, ending the six-game winless streak in Major League Soccer. This is what the Pigeons and the fans are hoping to see when D.C. United comes to the Big Apple. After almost winning twice and watching those two games during this period end in draws, including the insane FC Cincinnati match, the Boys in Blue must secure the win.
Of course, whether they will is questionable. Those draws, and the loss to CF Montréal, should have ended in wins based on the teams they played or the lead that the team had. It has been a tough time for NYCFC, and they need that confidence throughout May. As many know, there will be a pause in MLS play due to the World Cup. The Queens side does not want to go into the break in a bad spot.
At the very least, the Pigeons should have a confidence booster after they beat the New York Red Bulls in the U.S. Open Cup. All three of the goals were scored by unlikely scorers, for they were all defensive players: Kai Trewin, Raul Gustavo, and Thiago Martins. The result might not have ended the winless streak in the regular season, but they still beat another MLS team. More importantly, the win was over their main rivals.
NYCFC, despite not having a true starting striker, still has a strong roster. Rather than being 3-4-3 and seventh place in the Eastern Conference, they should at least be 5-4-1, which would put them in fifth place based on goal differential. On paper and based on how they have played, they could easily be 6-3-1, which would put them in third place. Alas, the past is the past, and it is not good for the soul to wonder “What if?” Instead, just beat D.C. United.
