The international break is over, and now every single game matters. New York City FC knows every match is like a playoff game, as the Pigeons sit in ninth place, the final postseason spot. But mistakes have been a major part of the story as to why the team is not where they should be in Pascal Jansen’s second season. But can the players quickly fix what they have yet to fix and win games that they are not expected to win? Can they start off the final stretch with a win against Chicago Fire FC?
These are the questions that must be asked, and the Boys in Blue will get a chance to earn a road win in the Windy City this weekend. NYCFC won the opposite fixture, and it was a convincing 3-1 win. But life has not been so good since that late July matchup, as they have only won once in Major League Soccer. Meanwhile, the home side has a decent 13-8-6 record, good enough to put the team in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Since the loss to the Pigeons, the team has gone 5-2-4.
In addition, Chicago has won their last two matches, while NYCFC suffered a loss and a draw in their last two since beating Real Salt Lake. In complete honesty, the Bronx side needs to play clean football to have any chance of winning, as Chicago is playing better. But the good news is that the international players are back after missing them during the Atlanta United FC draw.
Alas, that might not matter. Even NYCFC’s starters and best players have committed mistakes that have led to dropped points. At this point, repeating this over and over is starting to become a moot point.

Throughout the season, any break has not made a difference for NYCFC and their play. Will it be different this time after having the week off due to the international break?
