How to watch NYCFC’s Leagues Cup game with Club Necaxa, the time, and more

It is not official yet, but for the most part, New York City FC does not have a chance of moving on to the knockout stages of the Leagues Cup due to only having three points. In the Major League Soccer standings, 11 teams are ahead of them, with eight having more points than the Pigeons. Hence, all it takes is for four of those teams to win their final game to knock out the Bronx team, making the match against Club Necaxa seem meaningless.

However, many fans likely expected this scenario since the Pigeons had to face Cruz Azul S.A. de C.V. over the weekend. The game ended in a 2-1 loss. Cruz Azul is a top team in Mexico, and even without the injuries, they would have been a challenge for NYCFC. And this has been argued multiple times over the last few weeks, but the Pigeons need to focus on getting healthy. Playing extra games outside of MLS would not be helpful on that journey.

Regardless, Necaxa is a team that the Boys in Blue could beat. It will all depend on who plays and whether there are any of those silly mistakes that plagued the team earlier in the year. But the Liga MX side has struggled over the last few years. They finished in fifth place in the Clausura during the 2024-2025 season but have mostly finished in the bottom half of the table. Plus, Necaxa lost both of their matches in the Leagues Cup.

With a big game against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, it is easy to think that some of the usual starters will be rested. Again, NYCFC is pretty much out of the tournament, so there is nothing worthwhile to play for. Sure, there is the idea of ending Phase One with two wins this year instead of one. But Pascal Jansen should start some of the younger players instead.

Final notes

Hopefully, this will be the last match at Sports Illustrated Stadium. However, there are a few matches in October that the Pigeons will not know where they will play until they know what is going on with the New York Yankees and New York Mets. However, Citi Field should be available, since the Mets are not making the postseason at this rate. NYCFC fans do not know 100%.
