The 2026 FIFA World Cup is over, but the summer of soccer is not. Major League Soccer is officially back as New York City FC will resume play this week. The Boys in Blue will take on the Columbus Crew again to restart the 2026 campaign. They recently played them twice in May, winning in the regular-season home meeting while falling on the road in the U.S. Open Cup. As such, the team from the Big Apple will want to avoid losing in Ohio again.
Alas, playing in Ohio is never easy, and there are plenty of questions regarding the squad’s status. Of the players who were injured before the World Cup, who is back? Will the recent injuries to Aiden O’Neill and Kai Trewin impact the team to a point where they struggle? Will James Sands, who is officially back from his loan, be the difference-maker in the defense? Is the team’s newest Designated Player, Bénie Traoré, ready to start?
As much as NYCFC needs to restart the season with a bang and pile up the wins, it is unlikely that will occur. With a slightly different lineup expected, players will need to meld together. Plus, there will be more departures and additions as the summer continues. Hopefully, the team will not struggle as they have so far, and will even be a little better over the next month.
The first step, though, is to take the pitch against Columbus. The club and the fans can only know where they are by playing again. And who knows? Maybe NYCFC will shock everyone. Plus, the teams are only separated by three points, and the Pigeons have already won this season. They are capable of picking up three points against them.
