After two home games that were played elsewhere, NJ/NY Gotham FC will be back on the road this weekend when the ladies face Portland Thorns FC. They enter the matchup in second place in the NWSL standings, while their opponents sit in fourth place. The Bats will want to keep the good times going on the road, but it will be a tough match. As fans will recall, the Thorns dismantled them the last time they were in the Rose City.
However, Gotham FC has had convincing wins against two top-of-the-table teams in their three-game winning streak, including the Queens Classic win over the Washington Spirit. Plus, the Bats had the insane comeback win last weekend against Seattle Reign FC. Therefore, it is easy to say that the team can compete for the NWSL Shield.
Moreover, thanks to a few summer transfers, specifically looking at Sam Kerr, the NJ/NY side arguably has one of the best rosters in the NWSL. Their backline continues to be one of the best defensively, while the attack has improved immensely in the last few months.
The one thing, though, is that the Bats will be without Juan Carlos Amorós in Portland. The Gotham FC head coach announced after the Seattle match that he will be taking paternity leave, which is incredible to hear. More often than not, especially here in the United States, fathers do not take a period of time off when their wife gives birth. Maybe they will take time here and there, but not like this. Seeing a man, especially a head coach, take leave to be with his family can show others that they can do the same.
