It will be another Friday night game as NJ/NY Gotham FC will host the Kansas City Current at home.  This will be the third meeting overall between the two teams in 2026.  The Current won their home match in the regular season, while the Bats secured the glory in the NWSL Challenge Cup, adding another trophy to the trophy cabinet.  As such, this will be a match to see who will take the overall series.

Of course, Gotham FC is playing at another level thanks to their superb defense.  The NJ/NY side is in the middle of a seven-game unbeaten streak, and they would like to extend that in front of the fans.  Plus, there is no better feeling than winning a game against the KC Current, who truthfully are playing below their expected level this year.

The visitors are currently in seventh place with 30 points, which is ten fewer than the top-of-the-table Gotham.  But the home side continues to be successful, even though their backline has had multiple injuries earlier in the year, and they are now without Emily Sonnett.  They could be better at scoring, and supporters might not want to witness another 1-0 win.  If that happens, then that would be the fourth in a row.

Notably, while they only scored one goal against San Diego Wave FC last weekend, they still played extremely well.  And, truth be told, the Bats have been getting wins in matches where they were excellent and in matches where they were just okay.  But that is the difference between a great team and a championship-caliber side.

Final notes

Friday is Broadway Night at Sports Illustrated Stadium, and there will be fireworks too!  Gotham FC will celebrate the fantastic theatre of New York City, and really just musicals overall.

While the fireworks will have songs from musicals, the music will be featured throughout the evening.  Also, Lissa deGuzman, who has played Elphaba in Wicked on both the tour and Broadway, will sing Defying Gravity at halftime.  Lorna Courtney, who originated Juliet in & Juliet and will soon be in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, will sing the national anthem.
