NJ/NY Gotham FC fans are likely very happy about their team’s current form, going unbeaten in their last four games. However, there will be mixed emotions entering the next match, which will be against Bay FC. First, Emily Sonnett suffered a non-contact leg injury in the draw with Portland Thorns FC over the weekend. Based on the injury and based on the Bats’ history, it is easy to believe that she tore her ACL. The club has yet to clarify the injury, though.
Then, on Monday, Gotham FC announced news that was a little unexpected. Esther González and the team mutually terminated her contract so she could return to Spain for personal reasons. Now, there was a chance that she could leave this summer or at the end of the season due to Sam Kerr’s signing. But nobody thought that she would leave and temporarily step away from football.
González was loved by the fans, and she will be missed. But the season continues, and everyone, especially the players, must focus on Bay FC. Gotham has never lost to the California side, and already beat them in the home fixture this season. Now, on the road, they will try to sweep the regular-season series.
Plus, Bay FC is just having an okay season that is clearly not good enough. The team sits in 14th place while Gotham FC sits in second place. Notably, though, the home side is only four points out of a playoff spot, which shows how close the teams are in the standings. But the Bats should secure three points on paper.
