It has been a good week for NJ/NY Gotham FC. The team first beat Boston Legacy FC in the season opener last weekend. Then, it was announced that there will be a special one-night-only game at Citi Field in July, when the Bats host the Washington Spirit. Now, the home opener will be this weekend, and the ladies will ideally cap off their first match at Sports Illustrated Stadium with a win. To do so, they must beat the North Carolina Courage.
While the Courage struggled a little last year, failing to make the playoffs, they ended the 2025 NWSL season with a huge win over Gotham FC. The Bats entered the postseason with that disappointing loss behind them, but thankfully brushed it aside and eventually won the 2025 NWSL Championship. Nevertheless, it would be nice to get a little revenge and win this time around.
More importantly, Gotham must begin their games at home with a win. Fans will recall that the NJ/NY side won only four times last year on their home pitch, which is extremely awful compared to the expectations that have developed over the past few years. This club is supposed to be one that can compete, and ideally, they will never go back to their losing days again.
Of course, Esther González’s teammates need to score more goals this year. The home opener would be a great time to start this much-needed trend. The Courage have had a decent amount of changes to their squad, but this is still a team that can give Gotham FC problems. So, maybe three or four goals will be needed to secure all three points.
