Last week, New York City FC tied St. Louis City SC in a draw that felt like a loss.  The Pigeons allowed a late goal in a match where they were mostly incredible defensively.  Now, they will try to change their current trend of being winless in the last two fixtures, but they have a mountain to climb. For the first time since 2023, the Boys in Blue will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC, one of the best teams in Major League Soccer at this time.

Notably, NYCFC and Vancouver have met seven previous times, with the Bronx side having a 3-1-3 record.  Historically, they are slightly better, but that means nothing.  Five of the seven meetings occurred from 2015 to 2019, and as mentioned, the two sides last met in 2023.  In addition, the Whitecaps have not been one of the top MLS teams since the Pigeons entered the league.

Hence, after a brilliant 2025 season that saw the Canada team go to the MLS Cup Finals, and then a great start to 2026, NYCFC will face a Vancouver team that they have not faced in years.  This will be an extremely difficult battle, especially because they will be on the road.  Over the last couple of years, BC Place has turned into one of the best environments in the league.  The visitors will have to try to silence the crowd and focus on the game, pretending it is just them, the Vancouver players, and the pitch.

But can the Boys in Blue find a way to beat this team that has players like Sebastian Berhalter, who has turned into a top player in the past year, and Thomas Müller, a German legend and just one of the greats of the game?  NYCFC has some great players of their own, but their opponents have arguably been the better team on paper.

Final notes

During the week, NYCFC revealed the news that many were expecting: Drew Baiera ruptured his ACL.  There was hope that the young defender would earn more minutes as the right-back backup to Tayvon Gray and continue his development.  Now, not only will this be a roadblock in his growth, but the Pigeons will be without a true right-back to back up Gray.  Hopefully, this will not hurt the defense in the case that Gray has to be substituted out in games.
