It has been a busy last few weeks for NJ/NY Gotham FC. There have been adjustments to the roster, including Nealy Martin’s trade. Plus, there are rumors of Jaedyn Shaw joining the team in a blockbuster trade. Then, the Bats have won their last two NWSL games, including their recent comeback win against Angel City FC. But the upcoming weeks will not be easy, and the ladies must try to beat a team that they struggle to win against: San Diego Wave FC.
Historically, the California side has dominated Gotham FC since joining the NWSL in 2022. The Bats finally earned their first points against San Diego last year after drawing on the road and winning at home. However, they lost the home fixture this season. The question of whether the NJ/NY team can grab a win in San Diego is a fair one, especially due to the history. Plus, playing there has always been difficult, making this a perilous task.
However, the difference between earning any points could be who starts for Gotham. There was a clear difference in the offensive threat when Rose Lavelle and Midge Purce came on in the second half against Angel City. While the Bats were the better side in the first half, the clinical threat was lacking. Hence, it would make a lot of sense to have Lavelle and Purce start in San Diego.
Meanwhile, the Wave appears to be heading in a different direction compared to the NJ/NY side. They have lost twice and shared the point once in their last three NWSL matches. On the other hand, Gotham FC has won their last two NWSL fixtures and remains unbeaten in their last three. Perhaps this will be the perfect time for the NJ/NY side to earn three points in San Diego.
