Gotham FC vs Racing Louisville preview: A hopeful return to winning ways

It is hard to believe that it will have been 28 days since NJ/NY Gotham FC won a game when they kick off against Racing Louisville FC on Friday night. However, three straight games without a win make that a reality. The club's strong form out of the summer break means that despite the three games without a win, they still sit in first place in the standings, two points above the Washington Spirit in the NJ/NY side's push for their first-ever NWSL Shield.

The big "in your face" stat that stands out when looking at the last three games is just the one goal scored in 270 minutes. Despite the Bats' success in 2026, scoring has been a consistent weak spot with this group. They are yet to score four goals in a game, something every other playoff team other than Seattle Reign FC has done. Plus, they are tied for the third-fewest goals scored in the regular season, only ahead of Bay FC and Chicago Stars FC, the two teams at the bottom of the table.

Meanwhile, Louisville desperately needs a win to keep any hope of making the playoffs. After a pretty woeful first half of the season, they caught fire in late July, winning five out of six matches and putting themselves into the playoff conversation. They have since lost three in a row, falling 11 points behind Seattle in the final playoff spot. All of this is occurring with the team's future up in the air.

A hot and firing Kerr on all cylinders completely changes this team's outlook heading into the playoffs.

A player who is quietly having a great season for Louisville is Lauren Milliet. Hence, she is one to watch as well. Traditionally a fullback, Milliet has been deployed as a midfielder in recent months and to great effect. She has a goal and five assists in her last six games, bringing her up to nine goal contributions for the season, one more than she had in her previous five seasons in Louisville put together.

Prediction

A return to the win column should be on the cards in this match, even with it being on the road. A 1-0 win is the prediction, with Kerr scoring the one and only goal. This would not only be a really nice bounce-back win after losing to Denver Summit FC 3-0 last week, but doing so in a very Gothamy style would also help alleviate some concerns both internally and from the external fanbase.
