NJ/NY Gotham FC is in the middle of an 11-game unbeaten streak in all competitions after the draw with Seattle Reign FC last weekend.  The result was a little disappointing, especially since the Bats dropped points at home again.  It has been a common trend throughout the 2025 campaign, which makes this upcoming road match against the Kansas City Current a critical one.

However, the NWSL Shield winners are difficult to beat.  With a 19-2-2 record, they are the best team in the league and have already defeated the NJ/NY side in the opposite fixture.  This puts Gotham FC’s unbeaten run in jeopardy.  More importantly, a loss can see the team fall in the standings, and drastically too.  Third place through eighth place is very tight, with only four points separating the teams.

It must be said that the Bats are not guaranteed to lose.  Rather, if they utilize the right game plan and score two or more goals, then they will have a shot at all three points.  This will still be a challenge, and on paper, the Current should be expected to come out on top.

Gotham FC needs to have one of the best performances of the season.  Ann-Katrin Berger and the backline cannot make mistakes.  The offense must be better compared to the last two matches, which ended in 0-0 draws with the Washington Spirit and Seattle.  The clinical finish cannot disappear for a third matchup in a row.  Otherwise, it might be time to be concerned.

Final Notes

As mentioned, Gotham FC needs to score, and needs their leading scorer, Esther González, to find the back of the net.  She has not scored in the last three NWSL games.  Sure, others have started to step up, but the Bats can have a higher chance of winning if she scores, especially if it is a brace. Plus, she is behind Temwa Chawinga in the Golden Boot race, so scoring would help with that.
