Gotham FC vs Kansas City Current preview: Looking for goals in KC

Gotham FC will head to CPKC Stadium for the first time since last season's playoff upset of the Kansas City Current. The Bats will look to find their goal-scoring form as they enter this match. Take a look at the preview.

The lack of goals in NJ/NY Gotham FC games so far this season has been a bit of a double-edged sword, as the ball isn't hitting the back of the net on either side of the pitch. This week, the NJ/NY side will travel to the Midwest to visit the Kansas City Current for the first time since their shock quarterfinal upset of the 2025 Shield winners.

One goal scored and just two conceded in four games, tells the whole story of their opening four fixtures of the season. A lot of the issues regarding goal-scoring and the strengths of a solid backline from last year have carried over from 2025. There is obvious room to grow for Gotham FC when it comes to finding their attacking form, and they'd like to find that for this game against KC, as they have a three-week-long international break to stew on their lack of goals if things do not go well on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the season has been a struggle for Kansas City so far under first-year Head Coach Chris Armas. After a come-from-behind win on the opening match against Utah Royals FC, the Current have lost three straight with just one goal scored. They do get a boost this week as Temwa Chawinga has been activated from the SEI list and will be available on Saturday. While Chawinga will not fix all of their problems, she should fix some of them.

One notable absence for Gotham on Saturday will be head coach Juan Carlos Amorós as he and his family await the birth of his second child. Lead assistant coach Shaun Harris will serve as the acting head coach for Saturday's game against Kansas City. Here is a preview of Saturday's match.

Gotham FC vs Kansas City Current preview

Date

The game will be played on Saturday, April 4.

Time

The match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM ET.

Location

The game will be played at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

How to watch

The fixture will be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

Weather

Temperatures will be at 52 degrees and go up to 55 throughout the match. Wind speeds will be up to 15 mph with gusts getting up to 25 mph. Humidity will be around 40% with a 0% chance of rain.

Injury report

Bruninha (hamstring), Mandy Freeman (lower leg), and Taryn Torres (SEI- knee) will miss the match due to injury.

While Guro Reiten is not listed on the injury report, the expectation is that she will not be involved in Sunday's match as she and the club are still working through her visa issues.

Players to watch

The player for Gotham who has seemed the most likely to break their goalless drought has been Jordynn Dudley, making her someone to watch. Despite playing just 127 of 270 minutes in last week's trio of games, she has been able to get into very dangerous positions, get plenty of shots on goal, and also create opportunities for herself. Given she came off the bench in the last two matches, do not be surprised if she ends up starting on Saturday.

While Chawinga is available for Saturday, how much she will play is unknown. Ally Sentnor, however, is expected to start, and she can potentially have a good year, making her another one to watch. After an impressive rookie year in Utah, she had a pretty disappointing year two with just one goal and one assist, with neither of those coming in her 13 games after her trade to KC. She did score in the first game of the season, but like everyone else on the Current roster, has been held scoreless in the three games since.

Prediction

This is a really big game for both teams as neither will want to go into the upcoming long international break on poor form. Despite being back at home, though, it seems like KC's problems might run a little deeper than the Bats', which is why the prediction is a 2-1 Gotham FC victory. Dudley will score her first for the club, with Rose Lavelle getting her first goal of the season. The lone Kansas City goal will come from Sentnor.
