NJ/NY Gotham FC will embark on their next step towards retaining their CONCACAF W Champions Cup title as they take on Club América Femenil in the semifinal round of the 2025-26 competition's knockout stage. This is the second year in a row these two clubs will meet in the semifinals, with the Bats winning the previous matchup 3-1.
Anytime a trophy is on the line, Gotham FC will go all out to try and win it. This competition is no exception, with it being arguably just as important as either the NWSL Shield or Championship. With the club in really good form and a familiar semifinal opponent who they pretty comfortably handled last year, they will feel like they have a really good chance at repeating as champions.
América is coming off the end of their Liga MX season as champions of the Clausura phase, both in the regular season and recently the tournament, defeating C.F. Monterrey Femenil 3-1 on aggregate. This marks América's third title and means that, like Gotham, they enter this game in good form. They'll be looking for a bit of revenge for last year's match and will want to reestablish themselves as one of the powerhouse clubs in North America.
The two teams are in very different phases of their seasons, with América wrapping up a season that began in July, albeit with a month-long winter break in December and January. Then, Gotham FC is around a third of the way through their season, which did, though, include an abbreviated offseason. Here is a preview of Wednesday's semifinals.
Gotham FC vs Club América Femenil preivew
Date
The fixture will be played on Wednesday, May 20.
Time
The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM ET, 5:30 PM local.
Location
The game will be played at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico.
How to watch
The fixture will be streamed on Paramount+.
Weather
While there is a chance of thunderstorms in the hours leading up to the game, they should clear, going down to a 15% chance at kickoff. Temperatures will be around 70 degrees at kickoff, dropping to 65 by the end of the match. Wind speeds will be around 10-15 mph with gusts reaching as high as 20+ mph. Humidity will hover around 60% with cloud cover around 60%. Sunset is scheduled for 7:06 PM, which should occur around the midpoint of the second half.
Another big factor is the elevation. Estadio Hidalgo sits over 7831 feet above sea level, over 2500 feet higher than Denver, the highest elevation city with an NWSL team.
Injury report
CONCACAF does not require teams to release an injury report prior to their games. The best information that can be provided is the report from the game against Seattle Reign FC on Friday night.
Bruninha (hamstring), Kayla Duran (knee - SEI), Mandy Freeman (lower leg), Rose Lavelle (hamstring), and Taryn Torres (knee - SEI) will likely be out.
Players to watch
During last year's tournament, Esther González won the Golden Ball as the player of the tournament with three goals, tied for the second most. The Spaniard is yet to kick her NWSL season into gear with just two goals in 10 games so far, and could use this tournament as a way to get back on the scoresheet in a big way. That is why the Gotham FC player is one to watch.
For América, Irene Guerrero has played a key part in their success in both domestic and continental competitions, making her someone to pay attention to. The midfielder had three goals in four Champions Cup group stage matches and 13 goals in 20 league matches. If América wants a chance at winning this match, they'll need Guerrero at her best.
Prediction
Gotham FC will continue their stellar form in knockout competitions under head coach Juan Carlos Amorós with a 2-0 victory. Goals will come from González and Jaedyn Shaw, who enters this game in red-hot form with a goal contribution in each of her last four NWSL matches. While América has some good players and is one of the best teams in Mexico, this should not be an overly difficult match for the Bats to come out on top in.
