Life in the NWSL has not been the greatest for NJ/NY Gotham FC. After a superb 2024 season, the Bats have struggled in league play. Yes, there were a lot of changes to the roster, but there is too much talent for the team to be 5-6-5. However, they have had some success this year, for they won the most recent edition of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. Now, they will begin the defense of their title when they begin the group round with a game against C.F. Monterrey Femenil.
The teams met in last year’s group round. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, so one will assume that Gotham will aim to actually win this time around. Plus, as mentioned, they have been struggling in the NWSL and recently suffered an awful loss to the Houston Dash. So, they will want to start the Champions Cup with a win.
C.F. Monterrey will not be an easy opponent, similar to last time. The Mexican side currently sits in fourth place in the Liga MX Femenil. The players also score a lot of goals. In their five wins, they have scored three or more goals. At the same time, they were held scoreless in both of their losses.
As fans know, Gotham FC, with the exception of Esther González, has been struggling to score. But they are still one of the top defensive teams in the NWSL. So, it will be interesting to see whether they can stop Monterrey but score enough goals to win. The concern is that if the Bats allow one, then their opponents will pile on the goals. That is why it is vital that the backline is strong.

For one match only, Gotham FC will be at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. It is somewhat cool, for soccer is becoming a thing at Icahn Stadium. However, with the Bats playing a team like Monterrey, it is interesting that they are playing somewhere that only holds 5,000 fans and in a place that is a little off the beaten path. Nevertheless, that is the venue for Wednesday’s battle.
