The outcome is a point a piece as NJ/NY Gotham FC came away with a 1-1 draw at home with Boston Legacy FC. This was the second and final meeting with the 2026 expansion side, with the first match ending with the Bats as the victors in Boston. This result ends Gotham FC's three-match winning streak but extends their unbeaten run to four. Meanwhile, Boston has picked up points in three straight fixtures after losing their first five games of the season.
The home team will arguably see the result as two points dropped. While they are still down a number of defenders due to injury, they have found a way to play well and win games. And even though Boston has seemingly found something as of late, Gotham would have felt confident going into this one, believing they could walk away with another three points gained.
But the Legacy has found a little bit of momentum. This is their third in a row without a loss and another promising performance after looking overmatched in their early-season games. They are stronger compared to what they were in the previous meeting in the opening weekend of the season. Hence, it is not shocking that the points were shared.
Gotham can still carry positive momentum moving forward despite the dropped points from this match. It has been an important and impressive momentum shift in recent games, and it has come at an important time in the season. Not only is the CONCACAF W Champions Cup knockout round coming up in less than two weeks, but the summer break is almost here. The club would not have wanted to go into that long break, still in the quagmire they found themselves in earlier in the year.
A point a piece between Gotham FC and Boston
The first half was a real stop-start affair with both teams committing their fair share of fouls. While both had chances in the opening 30 or so minutes, there was nothing that really challenged either goalkeeper.
The battle then kicked into gear in the 37th minute when an outlet ball from Sarah Schupansky, in for the injured Rose Lavelle, found Jaelin Howell in the box. She played the ball across to Esther González. The striker then got off a somewhat weak first-time shot on Legacy goalkeeper Casey Murphy, who made the save but failed to control the rebound. The ball subsequently fell at the feet of Jaedyn Shaw, who tapped it home to give Gotham FC the 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, though, as Boston equalized just three minutes later. A failed clearance by the NJ/NY team resulted in Barbara Olivieri getting a cross in for Alba Caño. The Spaniard got enough on the ball to sneak it into the far post past a diving Ann-Katrin Berger. This snapped Gotham's 341-minute shutout streak in NWSL play.
As the second half began, neither team was able to build much momentum, with things looking very similar to how things had been at the beginning of the first half. The physicality and the fouls from Boston really started to boil over in this second half, with four Legacy players ending the game on a yellow card. The season high crowd of 11,308 really started to get on the referee after many no-calls or fouls that they felt were not appropriately punished.
Things then got really chaotic in the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time when Gotham just started flooding the box with chance after chance after chance. Boston had at least two goal-line saves, and Murphy managed to stop multiple high-danger shots. It was about as chaotic an ending as anyone will see before ending in a draw.
Gotham will for sure be disappointed to only come away with one point from this game, especially given they scored first and then conceded shortly after. This does cap what has been a really strong run of four matches post-international break. These four games, dating back to the April 25th matchup against Bay FC, were seen as being very winnable. The Bats have officially secured ten points from the possible 12.
They remain in fifth place right now, four points below Portland Thorns FC. They have one more game on Friday, away to Seattle Reign FC, before they head to Mexico and play Club América Femenil in the W Champions Cup semifinals on Wednesday, the 20th.
Some important milestones from this match saw Tierna Davidson start and play the full 90 minutes for the first time since March 23, 2025. This was also Guro Reiten's first full 90 minutes since signing for the club on March 12. Shaw also scored again in this match, surpassing her goal contribution total from last season with Gotham FC in four fewer games.
